| Show Music The Musical Theater Magazine - Spring 2000, Volume 16, #1 By Max O. Preeo, Editor In addition to cabaret, Valerie diLorenzo has played many roles in regional theatre musicals. But her most unusual gig has to be a long stint singing at Shea Stadium before each Mets game. We know how difficult "The Star Spangled Banner" is, and how, some famous singers have butchered it, so for diLorenzo to have performed it more than five years is something of a tribute to her skill. Love Is On The Next Train (Linda Lane Records 220198; 46:03) reveals diLorenzo has a big, clear voice and knows how to act a song. She's particularly effective with Sunset Boulevard's "As If We Never Said Goodbye," The Will Rogers Follies' "No Man Left For Me," Chess' "Someone Else's Story," and Blood Brothers' "Tell Me It's Not True." She gets the bitter humor in David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr's "I Don't Remember Christmas," handles "Satin Doll" with a light swinging touch and gives a poignant reading of "He Was Too Good To Me/My Favorite Year" (Rodgers and Hart/Michele Brourman/and Karen Gottlieb). Billy Joel's, "And So It Goes" is sung simply and beautifully. The only thing missing from this CD is dilorenzo's Shea Stadium trademark.
